Academia Aesthetic: Dark & Light

The academia aesthetic refers to a style inspired by the pursuit of knowledge. Academia aesthetic fashion is inspired vintage Ivy league university style and the classic clothes worn at European institutions during the 19th and 20th centuries.

There are certain movies and shows that come to mind: Dead Poets Society, Mona Lisa Smile, and The Queen’s Gambit.

Think: vintage, preppy, classic.

There is “Dark Academia,” which is quite literally darker in color, heavier in texture, and moodier in vibe. While “Light Academia” is about more romance, feminine, and delicate pieces.

Outfit Details

I’m into this look no matter what we’re calling it. Start with a head-turning plus size pleated plaid maxi skirt. Um, yesss!

Love the slit to show off your gorgeous wide calf boots.

Add a brown turtleneck. This is a pretty gorgeous outfit in and of itself, but I added some cold weather accents like this beautiful plaid scarf.

Wear it with the turtleneck or top the look with this stunning wool coat. Don’t worry if the coat is over your budget, I found some alternatives linked below.

And top the look with a black beret for the whole dark academia vibe.

Wide Calf Boots

These wide calf lace-up boots will fit up to a calf circumference of up to 20.9″ (53cm) and come in “custom” sizes.

I have a couple pairs of Duo Boots and the quality is unparalleled.

They are pricey, but they will literally last forever.

If they start to show wear, simply take them to a cobbler for repairs or even resoling when the time comes.

Lip Oil Stick

As y’all know, I have an obsession with YSL lip products.

Yeah, I’m a bougie b*tch with a good taste problem! And yes, they are silly expensive, sincerely.

However, if you wanna treat yourself, you won’t be disappointed.

You know I love the “Candy Glaze Lip Gloss Sticks,” which I have been rambling about a lot.

But these “Loveshine Lip Oil Sticks” are the OG MVPs!

They used to be called “Rouge Volupté Shine Oil-in-Stick Lipstick Balms,” which what they were called when I discovered them and fell deeply in love.

I included my favorite color: Nude Lavalliere, which is a pretty light shade of pink. It will likely look best on fair to medium skin tones. And they have a selection of colors…

Perfume

This Byredo perfume called “Bibliothèque,” which means “library” in français seems apropos for an “academic” look.

I’ve pointlessly taken like 4000 years of French and still sound like an idiot American when in Francophone countries.

But finally, today, at the age of 45, I used my extremely limited French in a professional capacity. Go me!

Madame Boucher, my fifth grade French teacher, would be proud! Magnifique, Alexandre! [Yes, my French teachers gave me a male name because there was no “French equivalent” for Alexa. It’s just “Alexa,” so like why?]

Anyway, so Byredo’s Bibliothèque is a unisex bestseller and has sweet notes of fruit, florals, and vanilla mixed with a dominant leather base.

I think if I wore this scent I would feel like Nick from New Girl when he sits at Russel’s desk for the first time.

He says the desk smells “like leather, Teddy Roosevelt, and wistfulness.” And the house smells “like Shakespeare. If Shakespeare were a damn cowboy.” And Russell himself smells “like strong coffee, and going to see a man about a horse.”

It’s a vibe.
