The Coastal Grandmother Trend

For those of you who haven’t heard of the “coastal grandmother” trend, it’s easy linen, buttondown shirts, cotton sweaters, neutral colors, and classic clean pieces.

Think of Diane Keaton’s wardrobe in “Something’s Gotta Give” or Grace Hanson’s outfits in “Grace and Frankie.”

Do you want to try this trend?  You don’t need to be an actual grandmother or have a house in the Hamptons to rock this aesthetic.

Outfit 1 Details

You can’t go wrong with a cozy cashmere cardigan.  So start there.

Layer the oatmeal color cardi over a mint green t-shirt.

This minty tee is from J.Crew.  In my experience, J.Crew tops run a little on the short side. 

If you have a long torso, you may want to size up or opt for another brand.

Add your favorite “lived in” denim to finish the outfit.

J.Crew Sizing

I chose these cropped demi-boot jeans from J.Crew.

These cropped bootcut jeans have a 26″ inseam and look like kick-flares with a  15.75″ leg-opening.

In case you haven’t heard, J.Crew now has many items in plus sizes up to a size 24 or 3X. 

Their sizing is comparable to Lane Bryant. 

One thing to note is that some of their pants and jeans come by waist sizing (vanity), so check the size chart below to see which size you are.

Accessories

The accessories are really want make this ensemble a “look.”

I saw these Tory Burch ballet flats in “light sand.”

I’m smitten!  I love the two-tone medallion in gold and silver on these flats.

Following suit, I created a two-tone wrist stack.

I started with a watch that is on top of my wish list: the Michele Deco watch with diamonds.  Yasssss, diamonds!

If diamonds aren’t in your budget, the watch is also available without the bling.

I then layered on some two-tone David Yurman bracelets and a Tory Burch hinge bracelet in gold and silver.

This is the wrist of a bougie b!tch, mkay?

The rest of the jewelry is easy peasy because labradorite looks great with mint green and aqua, always.

Some labradorite stud earrings and a labradorite statement ring wrap up the baubles.

Pro tip: check out Etsy for labradorite pieces at better prices while supporting artisans.

Lastly, a handcrafted woven leather bag adds an easy vibe to the look.

Beauty

Try not to gasp, I did not include my favorite lipstick.  [Gasp!]

This time I included the Dior “Addict Lip Glow” lip balm in “Coral.”

Because they are so popular, my curiosity is piqued! 

So I plan to pick up one of these Dior balms during the upcoming Sephora sale and will report back about how they compare to the YSL balms.  [I love the things I can justify as “my job.”]

As for the perfume, I opted for something really fresh, Jo Malone’s English Pear & Freesia Cologne.

My dearest friend gave me a small bottle of this and I love it for spring as an “everyday” scent.

I see that Dossier makes a perfume called “Floral Pear,” which is inspired by Malone’s Pear & Freesia.

So far I have enjoyed every Dossier fragrance I’ve tried, so check it out!

Outfit 2 Details

I decided to give you some more options with the same basic outfit.

Again, a cashmere cardi, t-shirt, and demi-boot cropped jeans.

The t-shirt is this pretty pink, but honestly, any color will work!

Instead of the woven leather tote, I chose a straw tote with leather straps.

I also chose sandals over the ballet flats.

I love these Birkenstock Gizeh Big Buckle sandals in Sandcastle Nubuck.

They not only trendy but also comfortable.  Woot!

Birkenstock Sizing

As I mention below, Birkenstock sizing can be a little confusing.

First, they’re made in Germany so they use European sizing, which is whole sizes only.

Second, some of their sandals, including those featured here, have unisex footbeds. 

This means they are wider than women’s sandals.

So for Birkenstock sandals, a “Regular” width fits medium to wide feet. 

And “Narrow” fits narrow to medium width feet.

Bottom line, check the width carefully before ordering Birks.

Jewelry

The wrist stack is the same as above. 

But I chose a two-tone coin medallion necklace to accentuate the v-neck tee.

Then threw in some pink stud earrings and a pink statement ring.
