This is the first post in a series of posts focused on a plus size work capsule wardrobe. In this series, I put together a collection of work clothes from City Chic that can be mixed and matched to create a lot of outfits. Now looking good at work has never been so easy! Over the course of this series, you’ll see fourteen different looks that are perfect for the office.
This post kicks off the series with three looks featuring a plus size pinstripe dress, which is a professional staple. Pinstripes, a classic element of menswear, box pleats, and a conservative midi length make this dress “menswear-inspired.” However, a waist tie, which can be tied in the front or back, adds a feminine detail that will accentuate your curves. By the way, if the pinstripe isn’t your style, the same dress is also available in a tiny polka dot, which has more of a vintage vibe, but still very professional.

Plus Size Work Capsule Wardrobe – Part 1
Before I dig into the outfit details, I want to talk a little about City Chic. I have been a City Chic customer for the past five plus years. I think my favorite pieces are their blazers, but I love their whole collection. City Chic offers quality and stylish plus size clothing in sizes 14 – 24.
City Chic is an international brand that is carried by major department stores in the US and worldwide. So if you haven’t heard about them, you should certainly get to know them. They offer free shipping and free returns for all US customers! And, they are offering my readers a discount code! Use code ALEXAWEBB30 for 30% off any regularly priced items, one use per customer. Also, their clothes are true to size, but as always, I recommend checking their size chart before ordering.
This first outfit is a classic, with a designer silk scarf, that will have you looking like you should be sitting at the front of the boardroom. A designer scarf can be worn in many ways including tied around the neck, loosely over the shoulders, over the head, tied as a headband, tied to a handbag and more. Although I think every woman should own a bougie silk scarf, it is not in everyone’s budget. So, I found some great alternatives that are “silk like” or on sale.

The second look from my plus size work capsule wardrobe is all about that pop of color! Just add any bright color pump or flat to make a statement. Personally, I love bright red pumps paired with a bold red lip. Go here for tips on choosing the right red lip color for your skin tone. Or try the new Fenty Beauty By Rihanna Stunna Lip Paint (I am dying to try) which comes in a universally flattering red shade called “Uncensored.”

And lastly, play up the femininity of the pinstripe dress in this third look. Add a sweet pearl embellished cardigan, nude pumps, and a nude lip. Layer on the classic feminine accessories like pearl earrings and a pearl bracelet. So classy!

Pantyhose? Color? Bare legs? What do you suggest??
I would do bare legs. If it’s freezing or you really feel you need some leg coverage, I would do a more sheer than opaque black tights/pantyhose with the black pumps. You might be able to get away with opaque black tights with the red pumps, but that is more of an “edgy” style, so I would probably swap the bag and accessories for something more modern and trendy. But, I am totally anal when it comes to the details, so take that as you will. Lol.
Love these! Looking forward to other work clothes; hard to know what to get sometimes as a professional plus-size woman.
Thank you!
Thanks, Erin! I’m glad you find this series helpful! 🙂
Looking forward to the pants version of this!
