Although I am about to offer you some tips on how to wear your wide leg jeans and pants in more flattering ways, please remember that “flattering” isn’t everything.
At the end of the day, wear what you like. Wear what makes you feel good. F the “rules.”
But, sometimes it’s good to have some knowledge and “guidelines” when looking in the mirror and debating how to style an outfit.

How to Wear Plus Size Wide Leg Jeans
My tips are:
- Wear your wide legs with shorter or cropped tops and sweaters.
- Wear your wide legs with your favorite tees and shirts but tuck them in.
- Wear your wide legs with short or tucked-in tops layered under a longer cardigan or blazer.
- Wear your wide legs with a longer top that has an empire waist.
I will get more into each tip with the following outfit ideas…
Wide Legs, Cropped Tops, & the Tuck-in
You may have noticed that many of your favorite brands are making their tops shorter, boxier, and even cropped.
That’s because wide legs are in and they look best with shorter tops.
It’s a new silhouette.
Unfortunately, if you wear wide legs with long tops, you look shapeless and sloppy.
And worse, the proportions look “off.”
This brings me to my obvious first tip: wear your wide legs with shorter or cropped tops and sweaters.
But, if short tops aren’t your thing or you don’t want to invest in new tops, the next best thing is a tucked-in top.
Tip two: take your favorite tees and shirts and tuck them into your wide legs.
J.Crew Sizing
All of these outfit ideas feature a black top and wide leg trouser jeans from J.Crew.
In case you haven’t heard, J.Crew now has many items in plus sizes up to a size 24 or 3X.
Their sizing is comparable to Lane Bryant.
One thing to note is that some of their pants and jeans come by waist sizing (vanity), so check the size chart below to see which size you are.
Outfit 1 Details
In this first look, I paired the wide leg jeans with a cropped muscle tee.
I added a black belt with some gold details.
And black mules with a chunky heel.
I added some oversized designer sunglasses. You can also try these similar ones I have from Amazon.
A trendy woven tote is a great choice for a casual look like this.
Jewelry
These stretch snake chain style bracelets are all the rage right now.
Wear them stacked.
I found and bought some similar ones from Amazon that I love.
They easily fit my slightly-larger-than-average sized wrists.

The larger ones are stunning, but they are heavier so keep that in mind.

This second look is the same as the first but I went with a different style cropped top with side-ties.
I removed the belt because the ties on the top are enough.
And I added a trendy “cloud bag” pouch.

Outfit 3 & 4 Details
This next outfit idea is the same but with a fitted black top.
Wear this fitted tee tucked in with the belt.
And in the fourth outfit idea, I topped the look with a black double breasted blazer.

Wide Legs & Longer Layers
If you’re not very comfortable tucking in your tops, try layering a longer cardigan or blazer over a cropped or tucked-in top.
It will help with the visual line in the front, but offer your some coverage in the back.
I recommend a cardigan or blazer that hits at at least the low hip or longer.
Tip three: layer a longer piece on top of a short or cropped top or tucked-in top.

Wide Legs & Empire Waists
So let’s just say you do not want to wear a shorter top or tucked-in top, how can you still wear wide legs without looking like a slob?
The next best option is to try a top with an empire waist or peplum style, that’s tip four.
This type of top, like a babydoll, can be longer and still look flattering because it has a visual horizontal “line.”
