Plus Size Outfit Ideas – Jeans & A Black Tee

My previous posts, Jeans & A Tee and Jeans & A Tee II, were very popular, so I decided to create some outfits with a plus size black t-shirt.  You can read about my love of these tees from Yours Clothing in my first Jeans & A Tee post.  If you don’t have a black tee, I highly recommend tees from Yours.  I, personally, love the 3/4 length sleeve version.

Update your jeans & tee look with modern cut boyfriend jeans.  Here is an excerpt from a previous post with tips on wearing plus size boyfriend jeans:

The boyfriend jean is a baggy or slouchy jean with a messy cuff.  Basically, you’re trying to look like you effortlessly picked up your boyfriend’s ill-fitting jeans off the floor, cuffed them so they don’t drag the ground, and then confidently walked out the door.  As if.  Pulling off this chic look is certainly not effortless, but it can be done, no matter your shape or size.  Now boyfriend jeans come in all sorts of varieties- cropped, ankle, girlfriend, slim-fit, skinny, distressed, etc., which means anyone can find a flattering fit.

Tips For Wearing Plus Size Boyfriend Jeans

  1. Slimmer fits with tapered legs look best on curvier bodies.  But, you want a little slouch to keep the look.
  2. Cropped boyfriends will make your legs look shorter, these are best for taller ladies.
  3. Slimmer and shorter cuffs will visually add length.
  4. The cuff should look a little messy.  Here is a great video on how to cuff boyfriend jeans.
  5. Boyfriends look great with booties in the winter months.

  1. I’ve just recently found your blog and started following you on Pinterest. LOVE ALL THE LOOKS!!! How do you decide what colors compliment each other? Is there a fashion rule when picking accessories?

  2. I love what you’ve done here! I’m so excited to be able to just click and purchase the items you have in your outfit sets. My question is, would you think that a v-neck shirt vs a boat neck would make a difference in the jewelry selection, and/or outfit look in general? I have a larger chest, and think that vnecks look better on me.

    1. Hi Cori,
V-necks or low scoops look better on me too, so I know what you’re sayin’! For the outfits above, I think either neckline could work. Statement necklaces are meant to to do just that- make a statement, so wearing them on top of a shirt is a fine option. Hope this helps! Thanks! – Alexa

  3. Hi Alexa! Where can I find a scarf similar to the one in the 2nd look? It seems that one is sold out. Thanks in advance!

  4. Hi Alexa, I am on a very tight budget, where can you suggest I shop to get the looks that you post? I also would like to ask, what is the difference between a 16 and a 16w? Because I sometimes find that I can wear an 18 or if I try a 16w it might fit better. But sometimes I cant fit either and have to go up to a 20, This gets frustrating to me. But I love the looks you put together. Thank you for your eye for style. Betty.

    1. Hi Betty!
I try to always include “(less $ similar)” options for most pieces to show places that you can get less expensive items to get a similar look. They come from a lot of different sources, including Target and H&M.

As for sizes, honestly, plus size sizing is just a mess and I always recommend knowing your measurements and always checking the retailers size chart before ordering. At some stores I wear 2 sizes bigger than other stores. It really isn’t standardized.

The difference between a 16 and 16w is the 16 will be cut smaller and the 16w larger. The “w” indicated plus size or “woman” instead of “misses.” It’s an antiquated idea, really. But the 16 is an extended “straight size,” while the “w” means plus and is cut larger. I hope that helps!
