Straight Size to Plus Size – Red Top

I saw this straight size outfit and immediately thought of this cute plus size top I had seen at Ralph Lauren!  And I LOVE the way Mireille of City Peach styled a similar straight sized top.  You can find all of the details of the straight size outfit here and you can also follow Mireille of City Peach on Instagram!  As for the plus size version, all items are linked below.

As I’ve said, these “Straight Size to Plus Size” posts are some of my most popular, but I also get complaints that the “models” in the images aren’t plus sized.  So I just wanted to give a little background of why I do these types of posts: We are all inundated everyday by images of thin celebrities, models, and bloggers sporting the “latest looks,” i.e. clothing that doesn’t come in our size.  So I try to take these “unattainable” images and prove that, in fact, with some effort, plus size women can put these hot looks together.  They are attainable!  And I try to take the effort, i.e. searching everywhere for the pieces, out of the equation.  So as always, my main goal is to inspire and empower.

  1. Hi,
I understand your reasoning for not showing plus size models in your straight to plus outfits, sort of. However, I think it is way more important to show outfts on plus women. We need to adjust our collective eye to be inspired by those images. How will that happen? Repeated exposure to images that are not a straight 0 to 4. It is a media literacy issue. Please re-evaluate your reasoning, and embrace the beauty and value of plus size images. Inspire, inspire, inspire….thank you

  2. Me myself from what i
    Had read she is into
    Skinny people only.
    That’s why she don’t want
Any plus size on or seen
    On her online page .
    And you know what there
    Are some very beautiful
    Plus size. Out there
    And stupid ass people
    Like this one has to
Put her foot in her mouth
And say oh i would rather
Not have plus size on or
In my store what a bitch.

  3. Alexa,
I appreciate you so much! Please continue doing what you are doing in whatever manner you wish to do it. I appreciate your style, guidance and help. I understand you are not in the business of paying models, providing inventory for models, providing a photography studio and paying photographers. While I agree we “need to adjust our collective eye” (well said btw), I respectfully disagree that you need to reevaluate your reasoning regarding these posts. My interpretation of the straight to plus size message is: “Plus size women can wear what they like and style ANY outfit, including ones we are bound to see on straight size models!” I appreciate seeing plus size images as well, and when following your carefully constructed and organized links, I find plus size models. More importantly, many of the websites also show real plus size people (not models) wearing the products. Your website has increased my confidence as a plus sized woman, and inspired me to be more thoughtful during purchases while enjoy styling the clothes I already own.

On the other hand, I am highly disgusted at the uninformed post containing hearsay, poor grammar, trolling and cursing. I would be very sad to see this type of nonsense cause you to become dishearten and discontinue your service. It is very easy to critique the work of others. If someone else would like to put in the hours of hard work and provide an excellent service similar to yours, they can do it in whatever manner they like. We cannot be all things to all people. Running a business has parameters and takes hard work. As the kids say, “you be you, Alexa.”

Again, I appreciate you! Please be encouraged by the thousands who love your work, whom you may never hear from!

    1. I absolutely agree with Alice Bell! She said exactly what I wanted to say after I too was disgusted and just annoyed by the other negative posts. I love your work and I appreciate the time you take to put these outfits together. You’ve given me confidence as a plus size gal and I can’t thank you enough! Please keep up the amazing work!

      1. Thank you so much, Rina! I really appreciate you taking the time to comment. And I am so happy to hear that you find the blog helpful and it has made a positive impact on you. I hope this blog can continue to be a good resource. I’m not going anywhere! 🙂

    2. Alice,
I can’t thank you enough for your kind and carefully chosen words! I have actually read your comment several times and each time it has brought a tear to my eye. I appreciate you coming to my defense and saying some of the things that I wanted to say. You are so eloquent that I’m quite glad you were the one to say them. I literally couldn’t have said it better myself.

And I absolutely agree that we need to see more body diversity! Surrounding oneself with images of plus size women is probably my #1 instruction to anyone looking to build their confidence and improve their body image. And that is THE reason I started my Pinterest account, which lead to this blog, in the first place.

And I am only one person, and despite having poured my heart and soul into this project, not to mention all of my time, I have learned that I can’t make everyone happy. I’m also learning to get thicker skin. And I do try to remember that for every piece of hate email or nasty comment I get, there are a hundred times more people giving me positive feedback. But, I thank you for the reminder, as sometimes it can be discouraging.

So thank you, thank you, thank you!!!

  4. i love this blog and it encourages me and helps me learn how to put these outfits together to have great style as a plus size woman. I see absolutely no problem with what Alexa is doing. As a matter of fact, I find it most helpful to see these styles and to use the links to purchase the plus items. Keep up the great work.

  5. Some people got their panties in a wad! It says ‘Straight size to Plus Size’ If these people would just follow the link they’d see that the red top has a Plus size model! LOL. Some people just don’t pay attention. Alexa, I just wanted to say thank you for all your work. I honestly am always checking your site for fresh ideas for work outfits! I can’t get enough and look forward to many more. Keep up the great work. It is appreciated!
