Plus Size Spring Mini-Capsule – Part 1

This is just Part 1 of a plus size spring mini-capsule wardrobe.

Is this a capsule?  Probably not.  A “mini-capsule?”  Um, who knows.  Lol.

These are just the two “starter” outfits plus white denim versions.

But many more variations coming your way!

Part 2 and Part 3 are now live!

As Always, a Disclaimer

Let me preface this with what I regularly say when creating a capsule:  I am NOT a minimalist.

If you’re looking for a minimalist capsule, I’m not your girl.

I am an unapologetic clothes horse.  Every closet in my house, plus a spare bedroom, plus half of my dining room, are full of clothes!  (I need an intervention.)

So this is a collection of ‘mix and match’ outfit ideas for spring casual wear.

Look 1 Details

I was inspired to create this little mini-capsule-collection-thing while working on a list of spring essentials.

A trench coat is one of the first items on my list.

I found this perfect classic double-breasted trench and it’s on sale!

So of course it would sell out before I could even get the first post of this series up!

But don’t worry, I found some alternatives:

Plus Size Trench Coats

I included a navy striped short-sleeved sweater.  I love the mitered striped on the raglan sleeves.

But any navy striped tee will also work!

Life is Short, Wear Stripes

But, if you’re unsure about stripes, please read this post “Are horizontal stripes REALLY making you look fat?,” written by Melissa at Suger Coat It

She explains, “No, horizontal stripes won’t make you look fat. Only being fat makes you look fat.  And you know what, that’s okay.”

I think Melissa does a fantastic job of breaking down this outdated “rule” regarding plus sizes and stripes.

Plus Size Ultra High Rise Straight Leg Jeans

In the first two looks, I show distressed straight-leg jeans.

These straight-leg ultra high rise jeans are from Abercrombie & Fitch.

Go here to read about Abercrombie’s fatphobic history if you’re interested in this controversial brand’s attempt at redemption.

A&F now offers select items in sizes up to a size 24, or a size 37 in their jeans.

Plus Size Ultra High Rise Straight Leg Jeans Sizing

The sizing is similar to J.Crew in that their jeans come by waist sizing (vanity), so check the size chart below to see which size you are.

Abercrombie Size Chart

These particular jeans come in 4 inseams: extra short (26.5″), short (28.5″), regular (30.5″), and long (32.5″).

These jeans also come in a “Curve Cut,” which as you can see from the chart above, has more room in the hips.

This cut will work better for pear shapes.

I haven’t tried any of their jeans because they don’t make my size.

But, go here for a review and more sizing information.

A Case for Distressing

For these looks, I chose distressed jeans.  I hear a lot, like “a lot” a lot, of complaints about “hole-y jeans.”

And I can understand wanting to look polished and age-appropriate, I do!

But, in some cases, the distressing helps keep things from looking too “stuffy.”

Remember, that “biddy-factor” I talked about when wearing tweed?

The same applies to conservative ensembles.

Because the rest of the outfit is so classic and classy, one trendy piece, like distressed jeans, will make you look cool rather than “too old” or “too much.”  Trust me!

As long as you don’t have much skin showing through any holes, you’re totally appropriate.  I swear!

Lipstick

I thought I’d also mention the featured lipstick is my favorite.

The orange-y coral lip is “Corail Dolman” from YSL

I layered it over a lip stain (one of my favorite ways to wear these).

As I’ve said, the Yves Saint Laurent Rouge Volupté Shine Oil-in-Stick Lipsticks (or here) are my favorite lipsticks.

I readily admit they are bougie AF and totally break the budget.  But they are amazing!

They’re 65% oil and feel amazing on the lips!  Not to mention they smell fantastic.

Plus, the packaging is so gorgeous that I actually bought a lipstick holder, like this one, to display them.

And I just can’t say enough great things about them!

The closest lippies I have found at more reasonable prices are L’Oreal’s Colour Riche Shine Lipstick and Sephora’s Rouge Lacquer Lipsticks

While both are similar, they aren’t even close to the decadence of the YSL ones.

Pro tip: Layer a lip stain like Clarins’ Water Lip Stain or Benetint (or here) under the YSL for longer-lasting color.

Looks 3 & 4 Details

In the second two looks, I swapped the blue denim for white Mom jeans.

These tapered ’90s supermodel mom jeans in white come in a curvy fit and standard fit.

Everything else is the same.

  1. Loving these outfits! I was actually looking for something like this, where I could look classy walking downtown and stylish at the same time. There are so many places these outfits would fit in. The trench would look great with so many outfits as a stylish accent piece alone. The two on Amazon and Walmart are more my price range, but I’d love the one on the J.Crew website, it’s gorgeous. Would love a silver accessories sample. Those Tory Burch sandals are so cute, but ty for the lower price ones on Asos which are more in line with my budget. This is a must have outfit TY!!!!

    1. Thanks, Michele!!!
These are such classic outfits, they can go nearly anywhere!
I need to include more silver. I’m so into gold these days, it’s hard for me! LOL.

  2. Fabulous! Really appreciate the budget friendly options! Can wide leg jeans be substituted? Any recommendations for different color for trench? TY
