How to Wear Sweats Like a Boss

Here are some tips for wearing the look:

1 – Choose a matching set.  A tracksuit or a basic sweatsuit, with coordinating pieces are in.

And that actually makes getting dressed so much easier!

But, if you opt to mix and match pieces, be sure to check this post for more tips.

2 – Add trendy accessories.  Although you’re dressed like you’re headed to the gym, you’re not actually.

So don’t be afraid to accessorize like you would any other casual outfit.

Wear trendy jewelry, hats, sunglasses, and a crossbody bag.

3 – Choose “elevated sneakers.”  You might remember from my post on the athleisure “formula” that sneakers should be intentional.

Choose classic or retro sneakers, such as Saucony Jazz, adidas Gazelles or CampusOnitsuka Tiger in any variety, or anything similar.

Many of these classic sneakers are unisex and come sized as men’s, which means they run wide.

If retro classics aren’t your thing, look for trendy trainers, such as Nike’s Air Max or adidas’ Ultraboost.

If you are really lost to pick out some kick ass sneakers, check the sneaker section of asos.  I feel like they are always on top of what is hot at the moment.

For those who need wide width, consider unisex or men’s versions of your fave sneakers.  Or try asos.

Bottom line, your kicks need to be clean, in good condition, and “elevated.”

If you wear your everyday gym sneakers or the dirty old tennis shoes that you wear to walk the dog, you’re going to look like a hot mess.

Not that there is anything wrong with hot mess, but we’re trying to look trendy and smart in this situation.

By the way, if you do find yourself some kick ass, trendy, and “elevated” sneakers, you will realize you can wear them with practically anything and look awesome!

And that is a total win for comfort!  Take a look at this outfit idea to see what I mean.

Also, you’re going to want to go sockless or wear no show socks.

Amazon Aware Sweats

I was gifted these sweat pant joggers by Amazon Aware.

They are sustainably made and so incredibly soft.

Plus, they are available in sizes XXS – 7X.  Woot!

I topped it with a coordinating sweatshirt with a puff sleeve.  So cute!

Accessories

I added a burnt orange baseball cap.  You can rock your favorite team or a cap without a logo.

For the bag, I chose this sling bag that Rosey Blair swears is a great choice for plus size gals.  She rocks it and is a size 24.

Make sure you follow her on Instagram and LTK for more incredible fashion.

For “elevated” sneakers, I opted for the Nike Air Max 90 Futura in Phantom/Hemp/Sanddrift/Black.  I love these!

For sunglasses, the classic aviators by Ray-Ban are perfect!

Jewelry

And for jewelry, gold classics: thick hoop earrings,  delicate bracelets, and a coin necklace.

The hoop earrings featured in this look are made by PAVOI, which I’ve mentioned many times before.

You can find PAVOI on Amazon, and must say the quality is really great for the prices!

I actually own a bunch of PAVOI pieces now.  I started with a couple of these thick gold hoops in the two larger sizes.

I’m quite impressed.

I’ve also recently discovered the brand Mevecco, also on Amazon.

I recently purchased this turquoise braceletpaperclip bracelet, and cable bracelet.

I freakin’ love them all!

You can check out my Amazon store and follow me on Amazon for more of my finds.

Jewelry Care

These are inexpensive plated pieces so you might need to “baby” them for longevity.

Avoid the obvious: showers, pools, spraying your wrist with perfume while wearing them.

Store them in air-tight plastic bags, if possible.  This will keep the plating from damage and tarnishing.

Beauty

Finish your look with an unexpected spicy scent like COCO NOIR.  Perfect for fall!

Top with a plum lip with my favorite tinted lip balm.

  1. Please bring back the full email messages where I could see clothing and links. I understand wanting to bring more traffic to the site but it will deter people from continuing to receive the emails!

      1. Hi Michelle,
Just as I said to Nyesha, there are several reasons that I am making this change… And my hope is that once I have the new mail system set up, which will include exclusive subscriber-only content, real-time sale information sent right to your inbox, and a newsletter in addition to the blog content, people will still want to subscribe.
In the end, I believe this should be a win-win. I hope you decide to stick with me.

    1. Hi Nyesha,
There are several reasons that I am making this change. It wasn’t a decision I made lightly as I knew it might be frustrating for some subscribers.

    2. Eh, it’s not really that much more work to click through to the website. I really love all the outfit ideas so much, I’d probably follow Alexa anywhere. I try to shop my closet as much as possible. It forces me to get creative. I have put together a few really cool outfits inspired by Alexa’s outfits. I am usually very frugal- at least I was before Alexa turned me toward that YSL Rouge Volupté Shine Lipstick Balm! I love that stuff. One of the happiest days in my life when I got an email about certain colors being 50% off. They really are worth the money. Just like these outfit ideas are worth the extra clicks.

    1. Thanks, Shanna! More good things coming to your inbox soon, including exclusive subscriber-only content, real-time sale information sent to your inbox, and a newsletter. Woot woot!

  2. Nope. Do not like the new format. Sweats are all synthetic fabrics and not very figure flattering for plus size women. No cool details. But glad to see athleisure styles for us retired “athletic” club goers. Looking cool while working out.

    1. Sorry to hear that, Candy.

As for the sweats, they are not all synthetic. The fabric content is 62% Lyocell. Lyocell is a natural fiber made from the pulp of trees. It is breathable, moisture-wicking, soft, strong, and resembles cotton with a far less detrimental impact on the environment.

Lyocell is considered “sustainable” because it can also be recycled and composted. It’s an amazing new(er) natural fiber. The other fibers, polyester and elastane, are added for stretch (just like they are added to cotton for knits).

I have and LOVE these sweats! They’re just like my cotton sweats only softer.

  3. I love, love, love this outfit! I am not a hot weather gal so I’m. Ore than ready for summer to be over and I’m looking forward to fall. Just ordered this outfit and can’t wait for it to cool down enough to wear it!

  4. I’m just fine with the format! It sounds like once you have it all up and running, it will definitely better for everyone. I’m flexible, I can roll with the changes! I do it everyday at work!

  5. Hi. I live in the dee south! Just wonder if I could get by with a black tee with this outfit. It’s on cold about 2 days a year here where I live!
    Love your style!! Thanks

  7. What’s color is the sling bag? I can’t tell if it is winter coral because the pictures on the freepeople website appears off. Shows more pictures of the rose color than the rusty orange one.
