Plus Size Spring Casual Capsule Wardrobe – Part 1

By request, a plus size spring casual capsule wardrobe.  My last plus size spring capsule, which focused on workwear was such a hit that I decided to create another.

I also received a lot of requests for a casual capsule collection.  Plus, I am always getting requests for a list of essentials.  This series is a bit of a hybrid of those two concepts.

As Always, a Disclaimer

Let me preface this with what I regularly say to these requests:  I am NOT a minimalist.

If you’re looking for a minimalist capsule, I’m not your girl.

I am an unapologetic clothes horse.  Every closet in my house, plus a spare bedroom, plus half of my dining room, are full of clothes!  (I need an intervention).

So this is the best “paired down essentials” list for spring casual wear that I could come up with.

Part 1 of More Parts

And because I got very carried away.  This just part 1.

I am going to try not to overwhelm you by breaking this collection and combinations into a few posts.

But, in total, the collection features 16 articles of clothing, 4 pairs of shoes, 4 handbags, and a variety of accessories.

I am not convinced that I finished the accessories list so stay tuned for some additions.  Like I said, unapologetic clothes horse here (raises hand).

And as I am typing this I realize I forgot to include these fab bangles that come in several sizes on the list!  See what I mean?

Go here to see Part 2, here for Part 3, and Part 4.

Denim & Tees

So for Part 1, I am going to focus on the denim, a plain white tee, and a striped navy tee.  You have undoubtedly seen some of these pieces on the blog before.

And hopefully, you already have some of these pieces in your closet.

Take a look at some of the combinations:

Mixing Prints

As you can see, several of these looks feature a Lilly Pulitzer scarf.  I layered it over a plain white tee or a navy and white striped t-shirt.  You know I love mixing prints!

For tips on mixing prints, check out this post.  And for an in-depth explanation, check out this IGTV video.

I added a coordinating magenta crossbody bucket bag.  It makes these outfits!

Magenta + Olive Green

But, more interesting, magenta has a complementary color relationship with olive green.

This makes the color of the bag “pop” with the utility jacket.  Remember when we talked about complementary colors?  And I made a video about it?

Also, check out this post for another example.

A Utility Jacket

I love a utility jacket.  They’re a great lightweight option for spring.  I wear mine in fall and spring.  And I treat the olive as a neutral.

To see more plus size outfit ideas with utility jackets go here, here, here, and here

If you live in a super warm climate, you could opt for a utility vest (and here).

You’ll see this utility jacket in many more looks from this capsule in upcoming posts.  Make sure you’ve subscribed to receive my posts by email to not miss out!

As  you can see, I also show that tan accessories with a navy striped tee and white sneakers or cognac sandals are also great combinations!

Sneakers

For the sneakers, I opted for a trendy take on a classic.  These low-top Converse Chuck Taylors sneakers are platform and leather rather than canvas.   See more options, including wide width, in the links below.

I love them!  But, any white sneakers will do.

Wear sockless or with no show socks.

And more looks:

Plus Size White Denim

The looks above are similar combinations we’ve seen but with cropped demi-bootcut white jeans.  These jeans are a modern cut, almost like a kick flare.

If you’re not familiar with JCrew’s or Madewell’s denim sizing, be sure to check out their size chart

Below is JCrew’s denim size chart.  I included it because Madewell is transitioning to a new sizing system for their plus size denim.  But, these jeans use the old sizing.

White Denim with Beige

You may have noticed that some of the looks feature the Tory Burch Miller sandals in “makeup” and a beige YSL crossbody bag.

You will see these beige sandals and bag more in future parts of this plus size spring casual capsule wardrobe.

  1. Alexa, You have changed my wardrobe and my life! I have followed you for years, and I now have a beautiful wardrobe that makes me feel great every day! Thank you so much! You are so talented!

  2. I love everything about this. Especially since I have most of the staple pieces I can invest in the accessories!!! Thank you for putting this together. I finally feel put together.

  3. This is brilliant! I’ve been following a while and use your recs to find new pieces and find a new way to wear what I’ve got. I get so many compliments on how put together I look (when I’m wearing an old t-shirt with joggers). This capsule has most pieces I already own (or similar ones with the same feel or lines I like better) and an awesome way for me to remix things for spring. Thank you for keeping me looking sharp.

  4. I have been looking at lists of “basics” and notice how many have striped shirt(s) and a utility jacket, two (or three) items that l have never felt the need for in my wardrobe. Though l must confess to purchasing the striped shirts 😦, l hardly ever wear them. Stripes just don’t feel like me, at least not skinny neutral stripes. As for the utility jacket, l have a well-loved olive corduroy jacket that makes me feel put-together no matter what l wear it with. I guess my point is that you should dress in clothes that make you feel good too.

  5. I love this! and most of your posts, however I’m wondering if you could include an option for each item for a retailer that carries something similar over a size 24/26. I think you have said in the past you are size 26, so I’m always a little surprised and little let down when none of the options are offered in a size for me (26/28). Thanks! I really do love what you do!

  6. What a great wardrobe capsule! The best part is I already own many of these pieces. Thank you for helping me reimagine my clothes in so many ways.

One comment on the slides. I saw them in one of your earlier posts. I thought they were so cute that I ordered them in an animal print and in brown. I found them kind of hard to walk in and they cut into my foot some as well. I thought I’d mention it for anyone considering buying them. I don’t have a wide foot. I were a regular width shoe.

  7. 1st, I love this capsule. I have been buying items here and there. I am a bit bummed a few items do not seem to be available anymore (like the magenta bag and one of the similar items – the last similar item did not do it for me). For the items I do not see in any of your sugested outfits (camo t-shirt, gray tank top, etc.) you put together, do you just consider them staples and use them as will? Or will there be even more than 4 posts about this particular capsule?

    1. Hi Charla,
That magenta bag is still available. And I consider the items to be staples. I wasn’t planning on additional posts as the other pieces are easy to mix and match. But, I will consider it. Thanks!
