Plus Size on a Budget – Coastal Grandmother

A plus size coastal grandmother outfit for my “plus size on a budget series!”

“Coastal grandmother” is still a trend, but who cares because this is just classic style!

My “Disclaimer”

I want to prevent some anticipated feedback.  So please keep these things in mind:

  • “Budget” is relative.  Some people easily spend $300 on sunglasses, while other people allocate $300 for their annual clothing budget.
  • You may be able to find these items elsewhere for less.  These are just some “budget-friendly” finds I have come across.  And I typically don’t link to clearance items because they sell out and then people are disappointed.  Also, I have no way of linking to thrift stores, but obviously, if you want to check out your local thrift stores, I think that is a great idea!
  • Recycle & reuse.  As with all of my posts, I hope that you can use the pieces you already have in your wardrobe.  Additionally, I assume that you can reuse all of the pieces below in other combinations with things in your closet to create a variety of looks.  Meaning, I think it is unfair to judge the expense of one outfit as though that is the only way to wear the pieces.

The Coastal Grandmother Trend

For those of you who haven’t heard of the “coastal grandmother” trend, it’s easy linen, buttondown shirts, cotton sweaters, neutral colors, and classic clean pieces.

Think of Diane Keaton’s wardrobe in “Something’s Gotta Give” or Grace Hanson’s outfits in “Grace and Frankie.

Do you want to try this trend?  You don’t need to be an actual grandmother or have a house in the Hamptons to rock this aesthetic.

Outfit Details

Get the coastal grandmother aesthetic on a budget with this plus size cable knit sweater.

It is so cute with a hood and zipper up the front.

Layer it over a striped tee and some medium wash flare jeans.

All classic pieces!

Accessories

For accessories, some classic gold aviator sunglasses and a trendy woven tote will look great.

Throw on some white sneakers and gold jewelry, including one of my favorite bracelets.

I love it!  And this bracelet looks much more expensive than it is.

It fits my slightly-larger-than-average wrists perfectly.

These beauties are gold plated, so you might need to “baby” them for longevity.

Avoid the obvious: showers, pools, spraying your wrist with perfume while wearing them.

Store them in air-tight plastic bags, if possible.  This will keep the plating from damage and tarnishing.

Lastly, finish the look with my favorite affordable nude lipstick.

  1. Alexa, I like the Coastal Grandma look! I would need to carry a smaller purse. Arthritis is a problem for my hands and arms.
    What style would look good?

  2. Thank you so much! I reference your site literally daily and have totally gotten better items and also have just gotten better at styling my stuff! Do you have any recommendations for petite jeans, and/or could you include them more in future posts? I’m super short (5’1″) so sometimes even petite stuff is long on me! I def cannot buy regular! Thank you!!

    1. Hi Heather,
You’re welcome. This is so great to hear! As for petites, first, have you checked the “plus size petite” section of my shopping guide? That should be a good place to start. As for jeans, I think Torrid (they have short and extra short) and Spanx are great options for petites. But, one thing to note is the Spanx lengths are longer than typical “short” inseams (they are typically meant for heels, so do check the sizing info). I hope that helps!
