Little Black Dresses

Everyone should have a go-to little black dress or “LBD” in their closet.

The LBD should fit correctly.

This is a staple that you may have to have altered but will be worth the investment.

You should feel like a million bucks when you put it on, so it should also be flattering.

These LBDs are universally flattering, but some suit some body shapes better than others.

LBDs & Body Shape

People often ask me to specify which outfits/items will work best for different body shapes.

Generally, I am somewhat reluctant to include that information because I think it can be too limiting.

If you love something, wear it!  Don’t let some “guidelines” keep you from expressing your style.

As I had said in all of my posts about body shapes:

  • Fashion is meant to be fun, creative, and an expression of the self.  There are NO RULES.
  • Ultimately wear what you want.  Wear what makes you feel good and brings you joy.
  • Everyone is unique.  No suggestion will work for everyone because everyone is different.  Some people are short, tall, long torso, short legs, small bust, big bust, no waist, wide hips, etc.  I could go on and on.  We are all unique combinations.  Use what works for you.  Disregard what doesn’t.
  • Experiment!  Because you are unique, you are going to have to experiment.  Try out some of my suggestions.  Use what you like.

All of that said, I did add some helpful notes about these little black dresses.

*For information on “classic apples” go here.

**For information on “new apples” go here.

Dress One

Dress one is great for apple shapes.  The empire waist will flatter tummies.

But it is also a good choice for pear shapes because the neckline is solid making the visual shoulder line look more proportional to wider hips.

The A-line silhouette is also flattering for pears.

Available in sizes 10 – 30.

Dress Two

Dress two is short, making it a great choice to show off shapely legs, which many “classic apples” have.

If you’re worried about coverage, try it with some opaque black tights like these.

It also has a deep V neckline, drawing the eyes up from the tummy to the bust and décolletage.

The center “twist” detail creates a new shape with a “faux waist” visually, making it a great choice for both apples and rectangle shapes.

And the waist line is high enough that it will flatter tummies with the gathers in the front of the skirt.

This dress will also work well for hourglass shapes.

It comes in sizes XXS – 5X!

Dress Three

The third dress is a body-skimming faux wrap dress with an empire waist, making it a great choice for “new apples.”

It also flatters a tummy with the height of the waist line (just under the bust), gathers at the skirt, and a deep V, which draws the eye up.

Plus, inverted triangles will look more balanced with the deep V-neck dividing the shoulders visually and the style of the skirt will create a more curvaceous silhouette.

And like most everything, an hourglass will also look great in this dress!

This dress is available in sizes L – 4X.

By the way, it also comes in a sleeveless version.

And if you’re looking for a little more leg coverage, check out this dress.

Outfit Details

So by now hopefully you’ve found yourself an LBD.

For a rocker vibe top with an ivory biker jacket.

I like the black trim on this one.

Some silver ankle booties with a kitten heel are just as rock n’ roll and great for colder weather.

In the second and third looks I opted for silver sandals.

Either will look great!

Top the look with some large statement earrings.

And grab a black clutch or a rhinestone embellished small bucket bag from Rebecca Minkoff.

Beauty

Start with a spicy yet feminine scent like Versace’s Crystal Noir.

I think it’s a great fragrance for winter date nights.

Make sure to add some highlighter to get that glow.

This highlighter stick is a great choice because it is a cream making it less likely to show skin texture or dryness.

Plus, it can be worn as a cream eyeshadow.

Since you’ll be rocking a smoky eye, go with a simple clear lip gloss with some sparkle.

Smoky Eyes

Get the ultimate smoky eye with Pat McGrath’s Mothership I Eyeshadow Palette.

I am obsessed with Pat McGrath’s Mothership Palettes!

These are true luxury items.  Total pieces of art.  And hella expensive!

I currently own Mothership IIMothership III, and Mothership VI

As I said in a previous post, “Do I recommend [these palettes]?  Absolutely!

Should anyone spend that much on eyeshadow?  F*@k no!”  Seriously.

But if you’re trying to treat yourself to something truly decadent and love to play with eyeshadow, give them a go!

  1. Alexa, I love this post! So helpful to see different options for different body shapes. I imagine this may have been more work for you but it’s so helpful to reiterate to myself why some outfits, as much as I love the look, would not be a good option for me. So thank you very much!!!!
